A new sound and light projection, Platinum and Light, will illuminate York Minster this October half term to help raise funds to conserve the cathedral’s medieval stained glass and stonework.
The new installation will light up the cathedral’s cavernous Nave each evening between 20 and 27 October, running the full length of its ceiling and down the West End, while surrounding viewers with dramatic soundscapes and music.
The new artwork has been created by Ross Ashton and Karen Monid, the artists behind the multi-award winning Northern Lights which ran at the cathedral in 2019.
It takes inspiration from Her Late Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the stories told through the Minster’s medieval architecture and historic collections, using precious metals through the ages to journey through points in York and the Minster’s history and their royal connections.
The events will help raise funds for the Minster’s current project to conserve the medieval St Cuthbert Window – one of the largest surviving narrative windows in Europe – and the stonework of its surrounding South Quire Transept.
