Ghosts and leviathans, the solo project of English/Irish producer Matthew Deane, first hit my radar almost a year ago to the day through his experimental track 19 Forever. Now he’s back with a new one. It’s called Tears In My Mouth.
By Graeme Smith
Given its title, Tears In My Mouth is an expectedly emotional track. Yet, there’s plenty of experimentation in it too, just as was the case with 19 Forever. Glitchy, electronic textures set the early pace before a solemn keyboard melody takes over. Matthew’s vocals are wonderfully smooth. Lyrically, he swerves cliché and convention while remaining relatable and memorable.
Matthew cites Frankie Cosmos and Joanna Newsom among his influences and with such a range of inspirations, it’s no surprise he’s able to create such a unique and interesting sound. With a new album on the way, I suspect it won’t be a year before we’re sharing more of his music.
