The Nutcracker Announced for York Opera House

Ballet lovers and newcomers alike will find joy and spectacle in the classical delights of Nerubashenko Ballet’s presentations.

The Nutcracker is a festive treat for all the family. Clara’s adventures begin when she is gifted a Nutcracker doll who magically comes to life…

A live orchestra will be performing the familiar scores, it’s the perfect complement to these remarkable ballets. This season the Smirnov-Golovanov productions will be presented by international artistes hand-picked by Ukrainian-born Ludmila Nerubashenko.

The legacy of the late Smirnov-Golovanov (Honoured Arts Worker of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and former Artistic Director of Odessa State Opera and Ballet Theatre) is preserved by his widow Ludmila Nerubashenko. Ukrainian-born Ludmila is the driving force in schooling young artistes with the physicality, artistry and creativity to faithfully interpret that legacy. She will select the cream of these young dancers to visit the UK in 2023.

Ludmila Nerubashenko was born in 1955 in Odessa. After graduating from the Kiev Choreographic School in 1974, she became a soloist at the Odessa State Opera and Ballet Theatre where her repertoire comprised over thirty leading roles. From 1988, Ludmila was a leading soloist and teacher with Moscow City Ballet. In 1993 she became the Principal Ballet Mistress with the company. She is responsible for rehearsing the major classical ensembles as well as preparing new roles with leading soloists and corps de ballet, as well as teach junior dancers. She is frequently invited to teach masterclasses at ballet schools in Moscow, as well as abroad.
