Discovery: Beth McKenzie

Beth McKenzie is a Manchester-based singer songwriter who has just caught my attention thanks to her intimate and honest new love letter of a track to her younger self. It’s called permission to love me.

By Graeme Smith

Permission to love me really got to me. It’s Beth’s account of her struggles with mental health issues as a teenager and she doesn’t shy away from the details of what that felt like. Far from wallowing in them though, the track feels like a bright beacon, a reminder that the dark days don’t last forever, that’ll it all be OK if you’re kind to yourself.

There is great strength in allowing yourself to be vulnerable and that’s exactly what Beth has done with permission to love me. That strength is infectious. I definitely recommend this track for anyone who has ever struggled. You can give it a listen below.
