The music of London-based country singer songwriter Kate Ellis has become a regular feature on our blog since Jane included her in her round-up of underground folk at the end of 2021. Most recently I shared her video for her track The Story You’ve Been Told and now she’s back with another video and a celebration of Trent Reznor’s Hurt.

Kate’s take on Hurt is stripped back and intimate, giving space for the song’s heart-breaking words to have maximum impact. Kate’s expressive vocals are as captivating as always and the track becomes almost ecclesiastic as its arrangement grows. The effect is doubled by the video, shot in an abandoned chapel.
