James Merlin is a York-based singer songwriter who first came to my attention at the beginning of this year thanks to his wonderous single Fairytale Life. Now he’s back on our blog with a new track. A heart-breaking tale of unrequited love, it’s called Across the Room.

Across the Room channels the kind of ’90s Britpop you’d expect from the likes of Oasis, and in the track James’s vocals take on a similar quality to Liam Gallagher’s. The track’s story is simple yet powerful, painting a picture of imagined love based on a voyeuristic encounter.
James came to York in 2021 and has been making himself at home in our fair city. You might have even caught him performing with his Beatles tribute act The Threetles.
