EP Review: Will Brown – The Walk Higher EP

Walk Higher is the liberating new EP From London, UK and Los Angeles, USA-based artist Will Brown.

By Graeme Smith

Will was born and raised in Kansas, USA where he was raised on gospel and soul before discovering the pop of Whitney Houston, Brandy and Sam Smith. Now he spends his time with one foot either side of the Atlantic, here in London and on the other side of the world in LA.

With Walk Higher, he’s captured a personal journey that speaks of resilience and dignity in the face of adversity. It’s a journey that starts with the EP’s title track. It’s a bouncy beginning, bringing together lively pop and emotional soul. There’s something instantly relatable about it, especially in its stirring lyrics which will give you a shot in the heart. It’s a great start.

Dancing For Myself is a groovy track that feels darker without losing the uplifting message. It’ll definitely get you moving. Surround You is a floating pop track where Will’s vocals become particularly soulful. Its lyrics are beautifully romantic and we get a soaring chorus that’s a highlight.

Mercy slows things down. Led by piano, we get a stripped-back and vulnerable moment from Will. From its pensive beginning we get a triumphant finish. Finally Free closes the EP with some dance sensibilities. A driving electronic tempo contrasts nicely with Will’s organic vocals. It’s a stunningly cathartic conclusion.

Pop lovers will find a lot to like about Walk Higher, and if you’re looking for an emotional boost today you need look no further than this five track collection. Will Brown knows his way around a melody and uses his influences well to create something beautifully unique. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on. I can’t wait to hear what he does next.
