Rotterdam, Netherlands-based artist Ruud Voesten has featured a couple of times before this year on our blog. In May, he made it into Jane’s Monthly Favourites round up, and she’s even already shared his latest track The Crypto Shuffle last month. I thought it was so good it deserved another spin.
By Graeme Smith
The Crypto Shuffle is about greed, which comes in many forms but not least in the form of cryptocurrency culture. For his latest track, Ruud delves into this world of get rich quick schemes and fraud. The result is an expressive jazz odyssey that opens minimal but builds into a dizzying groove. The track is part of a wider exploration of capital sins, as inspired by Dark Age literature like Divine Comedy.
Ruud Voesten plays drums and composes, and is joined on the track by Mo van der Does on alto saxophone, Wietse Voermans on tenor saxophone, Koen Schalkwijk on grand piano, and Tijs Klaassen on double bass. Recording and mixing is by Micha de Kanter and mastering by Wessel Oltheten. The studio is Fattoria Musica in Germany.
