Discovery: Carrie Newcomer

American folk artist Carrie Newcomer is a bit of an icon, but she’s only just come to our attention. That’s all thanks to the title track of her newest album which seeks to find an alternative route through today’s troubled times without resorting to rage or worry. It’s called A Great Wild Mercy.

By Graeme Smith

Against today’s onslaught of information, Carrie suggests that the best thing we can do is embrace what heals us. This mantra runs right through her latest album and its title track, delivered through a soft and ethereal folk arrangement. Carrie has a knack for storytelling with her lyrics and the detail in A Great Wild Mercy will have you gripped. Lovers of classic and modern folk will embrace it in equal measure.

The album from which A Great Wild Mercy is taken features bassist Paul Kowert, guitarist and songwriter Jordan Tice, violinist Brittany Haas, drummer and percussionist Jim Brock, vocalist Siri Undlin, and pianist Gary Walters. The album is out now in all the usual places, and you can listen to single below.
