Discovery: Maze Cricket

Maze Cricket is a Thessaloniki, Greece-based alternative artist who has just caught my attention with her upcoming new single. A DIY electronic pop track, it’s called Incidental Contact High.

By Graeme Smith

Very much a solo project, the writing, performance, recording and production for Maze Cricket is all done by one woman. The result is that her music feels very personal, and provides a unique point of view. Her releases also feel quite distinctive from each other too, and Incidental Contact High shows us a different side of the Maze Cricket sound to her 2023 album Blue Orange.

Inspired by a dark short story, Incidental Contact High has something of the poetic about it. It also feels a touch surreal, with lingering synths creating atmosphere over a driving percussive arrangement. Eerie vocals round things out, almost whispered but highly impactful. Through it all, though, it’s a very human story, reflecting on how innocuous touch can sometimes feel profound.

Incidental Contact High is set for release this Friday, 16 March. You’ll be able to find it in all the usual places.
