Discovery: Palmer

Palmer are an Ohio, USA-based Americana band who have just come to my attention through the unconventional take on the genre. Their debut double-A side single is called Ghost Town/Tennessee.

By Graeme Smith

Palmer are Jon Brasfield on songwriting duties, vocals and guitar, David Hamblin on bass and Nick Piper on drums.

Jon’s songwriting is inspired by themes of psychology and geography, both featuring heavily in the lyrics of Ghost Town and Tennessee. Both tracks brim with a sense of place, brought vividly to life through a sound that sits somewhere between rock and country. Jon takes his cues from classic artists like Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and David Bowie and you can hear the influences in his way with words.

Feeling both familiar and unique, I’m looking forward to hearing more from Palmer. Luckily, the band are promising an EP release soon.

Ghost Town/Tennessee features organ by Kevin Ashba and backing vocals by Chris Brasfield. It was recorded at Legacy Sounds Studio in Lima, Ohio, and was produced by Omar Zehery of Hit the Lights. It’s is out now via Rustgaze Records and you can check it out below.
