Interview: Bosola

Newcastle band Bosola have only released their second single, yet they already sound incredibly accomplished for such a young band! The track in question is titled Comfort Disorder, and it’s a lovely slice of pop-rock music with a dreamy sound. Why not find out more about Bosola now before they hit the big time?

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a new single titled Comfort Disorder. What can you tell us about the song?

It’s a power pop song about getting the ick for someone who just won’t quit liking you. It’s the first song that Austin (lead guitar) and I (Tim – guitars and vocals) wrote together. If you like Teenage Fanclub, Big Star and Smashing Pumpkins, you should give it a go.

How has the reception to Comfort Disorder been so far, and where can it be purchased?

Yeah it’s been good! The reviews have been great and we’re getting good streaming numbers so I’m happy!

Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?

We are returning to the studio soon to record at least 2 new singles, but we might be looking at something more long form in the not too distant future.

Do you have any plans to release an album or EP in the near future?

I think that’s probably the dream. I guess it helps to put you on the map musically, as until now we have just been building a following with singles and EPs. I think we can write good music now, but the next step is to make a musical statement and build a brand around it.

Your music has an alt-rock/power-pop sound. What/who are you most influenced by? What have you been listening to recently?

Our influences are definitely diverse across the band but as the lead songwriter, I tend towards songs that reflect the complexity of life. Energetic sad songs mostly – life is suffering but there’s hope, maybe. The Smiths are a big influence, as are Teenage Fanclub and The Replacements for us. Recently I’ve been listening to the new Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard and Adrianne Lenker records on repeat. Very different but very good albums.

You’re from Newcastle. What is the local music scene like in your area at the moment?

The Newcastle scene is really healthy I think at the moment. We’ve had a few venue closures and tickets can be hard to shift at times, but we’ve also had a few new venues and festivals start up so that’s good. It’s quite a diverse scene I think, but we kind of sit on the outskirts of the scene at the moment, so we are hoping to continue building our fanbase locally.

How did the band first get together?

Bosola started as a solo project when I first moved to Newcastle from Bristol. I had a load of songs kicking about from previous projects in Cardiff and Bristol, so I just started arranging them acoustically. I soon got Pete in on banjos, flutes and bass when I started gigging, and then when COVID hit, we decided to get in a studio as a band, and that’s when my punk rock influences started to creep in. Over the years we’ve added and lost members but we are currently a 4 piece band with Rob (drums) and Austin joining about 12 months ago.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up over the next few months? Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

We are playing at the Globe in Newcastle on the 7th June.

Any last words for the fans?

Thanks very much and keep streaming and coming to the gigs. We really appreciate it!
