Interview: (BR)OTHERS

(BR)OTHERS is a fairly new act on the music scene, consisting of duo Michael Bland and Sonny T. They’ve recently dropped their debut single, interestingly titled (Br)other creating a form of funk-pop with a retro sound. It’s a catchy little number, so why not check it out after reading through this interview with Michael?

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a new track called (Br)other. What can you tell us about the song?

It was written during the pandemic of 2020. I just kept thinking about all my friends and how much music matters, and a lot about Sonny. He’s really like my brother. We have an almost psychic connection. It can be strange.

How has the reception to (Br)other been so far, and where can it be purchased?

It’s been better than I could imagine. You can get it just about anywhere people are getting their music these days.

It’s your debut single, yet it sounds very accomplished! What is the writing and recording process like for you?

Most often, ideas just come. I’ll hear something and chase it. But, (Br)other was an idea I consciously pursued. And, as i got into it, i decided to just tell the truth about Sonny and me. The chorus wrote itself, more or less. I did a demo on Logic Pro, showed it to Ryan Smith at Hygh Tension Records. He heard immediate potential. Then, i got the bright idea to do it as a duet with Sonny. That led to us teaming up and going for it as a duo.

Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?

Yes.

Are there any plans to release an album or EP in the near future?

Somewhat.

Your music has a retro rock sound. What/who are you most influenced by? What have you been listening to recently?

(Br)other is no indication of a style, genre or sound we intend to stay faithful to. I listen to all music, old and new. The next single will likely be nothing like this one.

Where are you based? What is the local music scene like in your area at the moment?

We are based in Minneapolis. All kinds of music happens here.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up over the next few months?

Doing summer dates with Soul Asylum. I’ve been drumming with Soul Asylum for almost 20 years. Other than that, writing new material whenever I can.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

No.

Any last words for the fans?

We love you, and thanks for your support!
