IAMTHELIVING gives us some brightness in his debut album, Nebra Sky.
By Graeme Smith
Real name Rian Peters, IAMTHELIVING is a London-born, Vancouver, Canada-based alternative R&B singer songwriter. He previously featured on this blog in 2023 with part 1 of his debut album Nebra Sky. Now the full album is out.
Nebra Sky is a collection all about life, love and resilience. Rian intends the album to be a bright light in a dark world and you get that vibe straight away from funky and introspective opener Rockin’ London City. We get an instant taste of his soulful vocals and the first chorus proves a memorable hook that draws us in. It’s a strong start.
Focus track I’ll Get it Done proves a highlight thanks to its percussive groove and encouraging lyrics. They are delivered beautifully by Rian, especially during a soaring chorus. The track ends brassy, vibrant and poppy in a moment that will stay with you.
Make It Home Alive sees him join forces with Jake Isaac for a soaring number before The Weekend, featuring Braxton Cook, encourages us to throw off our daily routine and party. Rian’s clearly an artist that works well with others. The romantic Love So Divine (Follow the Sun Version) is a team up with Kitt & Knowmadic and gives us some sultry textures.
Elsewhere Let’s Talk About It provides some groovy vulnerability. Can’t Be Replaced slows things down in a bluesy moment. Waterslide seduces with its sultriness. Open Space is relaxing and image-laden. Light Me Up is acoustic and airy, Calloused Heart is raw and resilient, and Trust the Journey is simmering and spiritual. Superhero closes the collection with an intimate, nostalgic tribute to Rian’s mother.
IAMTHELIVING is an artist with an incredible voice, an infectious optimism, and a beautiful way with words. Nebra Sky is one of the most uplifting album’s I’ve heard for awhile, maybe ever. If you need a pick-me-up, stick it on today.
Nebra Sky is out now to stream, and available to pre-order on vinyl. You can give it a listen below.
