An Australian alt-pop artist, Chymes is new to our blog but is already building an impressive fanbase, which includes BTS star Jungkook. Additionally , her music can be heard in TV series Good Trouble and Pretty Little Liars.
Her new EP is called Alien and is about feeling like the odd one out and embracing it. It’s the follow up to her 2023 EP, Game Over, and sees her try a new sonic direction. Chymes’ originality shines through immediately in EP opener UFO, which combines a pop sensibilities with some big bass and defiant lyrics. It’s a catchy and attention-grabbing start.
Sweet beautifully balances softness and hardness with an edgy, experimental number that hits hard with its chorus. Celestial is a powerful and empowering centrepiece while Voodoo Doll is steamy and sinister. New single Sour is a late EP highlight, giving us an exotic groove and plenty of sensuality. For good measure, we also get an Extraterrestial Version of UFO, which sees Chymes team up with Youha.
Few are doing electronic pop like Chymes. Her bravery in doing her own thing while infusing her creations with plenty of cool edginess makes her music captivating. All the while, she delivers relatable emotion with crystalline vocals. Her new EP is a triumph.
Alien is out now via Nettwerk. You can give it a listen below.
