Canadian musician Michael Gabriel released a phenomenal album back in 2023, titled Surfacing. Somehow we missed the original release, but I was very grateful to discover the record due to Michael’s recent single, Island. It’s hard to describe by genre, as Michael mixes elements of many different styles into his music (which is definitely a good thing for me!), but the track has an electronic basis, inspired by artists like Moby and David Bowie. I wanted to chat and learn more about Michael and his music – you can also check out Surfacing at the end of this interview!

You recently released a new single titled Island. What can you tell us about the song?
Island is a track from my solo debut album, Surfacing. It reflects timeless, universal themes of isolation, loneliness, and lost love. I’m especially proud of Letisha’s passionate vocal performance. The song draws inspiration from iconic British trip-hop, downtempo, acid jazz, and chill-out artists like Zero 7 and Olive.
How has the reception to Island been so far, and where can it be purchased?
We’re truly amazed by the attention and praise it’s received! I think we’re breaking free of the genre constraints that often dictate how music is marketed today. Some listeners may also be curious about what kind of music an ex-member of Men Without Hats would create in the 21st century! We’re deeply grateful for the support and encouragement. Readers can download the track or album from our website or Bandcamp, or you can stream/download it on or from platforms like Tidal (our favourite for its artist-friendly model), Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify, Deezer, and Pandora, among others.
Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?
Absolutely! We’re finishing the mastering of a new single titled Forever, a Moment, which we plan to release in January or early February 2025.
Your last album Surfacing was released in 2023. Are there any plans to release another album or an EP anytime soon?
Yes! There’s a single scheduled for release on January 22nd, entitled Forever, a Moment, and we’re planning to release another album this year. We already have the title and cover ready, so that’s sorted!
We’ve just had the main holiday season of the year. Did you do anything special?
It’s always wonderful to spend quality time with family and friends during the holidays. We also rang in the New Year by dancing to some fantastic live music at a local venue.
You’re based in Nova Scotia. What is the local music scene like in the area?
It’s very different from my home city of Montreal. The local scene here leans heavily toward rural genres like folk, country, and Celtic music (after all, it’s ‘New Scotland’), along with blues and rock. The talent in these styles is immense!
Island is quite a unique-sounding song. What/who were you most influenced by when writing the track? What have you been listening to recently?
Thank you! We aim to create truly unique music. I love melody and dance music, which is why I describe my genre as ‘Listen & Groove Music’ – it’s music for your soul and your body. Recently, I’ve been streaming a lot of chill-out, house, and soul classics. I also (re)discovered Digable Planets and LTJ Bukem, which has been inspiring.
Do you have anything else exciting coming up over the next few months?
I recently became a member of the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) and look forward to promoting new music and exploring collaborations with other independent artists, both locally and internationally.
Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?
Right now, we’re focusing on studio releases, but we’re open to live performances if there’s enough interest. The UK holds a special place in my heart for its culture, music, friends, and family, so it’s definitely a destination we’d love to visit.
Any last words for the fans?
A big, heartfelt thank you for all your love and support! The UK has been especially kind to us, and we’re committed to creating more unique, engaging, and Listen & Groove music. Cheers!
