Better known as a sideman (fiddle player), it was COVID that gave Adam Moe the opportunity to go solo. He’s new to our blog through his latest album, Leaving Can’t Be Wrong.
By Graeme Smith
Moe’s new album is a varied ten-track effort which all centres around a theme of classic country and folk. It opens in lively fashion with the philosophical effort Some Days and lets up from there.
A sense of expertise is infused in each note. Moe has a career that spans over 20 years and it shows. Based in Duluth, Minnesota, you might think it tricky to get the Southern country sound right, but he and his players manage it with apparent ease.
Beggars Can’t Be Choosers invokes a bluesy country bar with plenty of smoky atmosphere. Blue Skies and Highways is a cantering early highlight full of wanderlust. Other highlights include moody title track Leaving Can’t Be Wrong which tells a tale of escaping small town America, the piano-led, conversational Fool on the Stool Next To You, the mournful Never Fool This Fool Again and bouncing album closer, Where Would I Be Without You.
If you’re a fan of classic country, then Adam Moe’s new album is a must-listen. Even if it’s not your genre of choice, you’re bound to get something out of its rich compositions and storytelling lyrics.
Leaving Can’t Be Wrong is out now and you can give it a listen below.
