Captain Frederickson get awkward for irreverent new album

With its tongue planted firmly in its cheek, Introverts Unite is the new album from Captain Frederickson.

By Graeme Smith

Introverts Unite is raw, raucous, irreverent punk rock introduced by the delightfully silly Minivan vs Dignity which takes on automotive regret. From there, things never let up. Magenta overwhelms with its fuzzy bass. It provides some nice contrast to its laidback vocals which tell their colourful tale. Title track INTOVERTS UNITE provides an anthem for social anxiety.

The album continues with unexpected, niche tales over eleven tracks. Darts, Dyson Airblades, and hats all get scrutinised in worryingly minute detail.

It’s the second offering we’ve shared from the transatlantic Captain Frederickson, following on from 2022’s The Yips. While The Yips was certainly an experimental album, Introverts Unite pushes the envelop further, combining comedy and tragedy against a backdrop that rocks hard. To derive their sound, the band called on the likes of Mclusky, Shellac, Pissed Jeans, and Jesus Lizard.

If, like me, you’re a fan of punk that doesn’t take itself too seriously, you’re going to find a lot to love about Captain Frederickson’s sound. I’m not their only backer. Minivan vs Dignity has been played by KEXP in the States and on BBC 6 Music over here.

Introverts Unite is out now, available to buy as a digital album on Bandcamp. You can give it a listen below.
