Reuben Medlin returns with reflective new album

Housebound with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for almost two years, Wiltshire-based rising star Reuben Medlin reflects on his life through new album, It’s A Long Walk Home Pt. 2.

By Graeme Smith

“This album came together during a time when I couldn’t even go up and down the stairs without careful planning,” says Medlin. “It explores my silenced emotions, struggles, hopes and motivation to escape that scary place. I’m so relieved it’s finally coming out to the world, and I can’t wait to get out and play it live.”

It’s A Long Walk Home Pt. 2 opens with some world-weariness with the deceptively upbeat Another Day on Earth. It’s a track that sets the emotional tone for the whole album, which mixes darkness and light with stunning depth.

Lead single Live My Life Happy too has a brightness that disguises the theme of its lyrics, which speak of struggling from day to day. It is, of course, a highlight.

Elsewhere Be What You Wanna Be has a soft, psychedelic groove and hopeful lyrical message. Sellout Saturday is another highlight thanks to its boppy electronic instrumental and well-placed vocal effects. Sunshine Of My Life is a warm and romantic moment with a memorable melody in its chorus. Silent Boy closes the album with a slow-burning and soul-bearing moment. A stripped-back and rumbling opening finally arrives at an acoustic rock groove that will have you moving along.

Throughout we get spades of anthemic indie pop. Medlin has the kind of sound that’s easy to love and clearly gets him noticed. All his releases to date have been championed by BBC Introducing. Here at York Calling, we keep returning to his music.
