The duo of Cherrie Anderson and Hal St John, aka Ooberfuse, has featured a few times before on our blog, yet always surprise us with their latest offering.
By Graeme Smith
Their new single Zeeba Da Boo (Why oh Why) shows us a swinging and upbeat side to their sound. Anderson’s soulful first verse gives way to a chorus full of St John’s scatting and bouncing beats. Playful brass follows before things launch into a move-inducing second verse. The lyrics speak of struggling through life, chasing dreams, and embracing the light with depth that tempers the liveliness of the instrumental.
A colourful video celebrates Alices Adventures in Wonderland in suitably surreal style.
Zeeba Da Boo draws inspiration from St John’s father, a talented trumpet player who introduced him to the sounds of jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Kenny Ball. In this regard, there’s a retro vein that runs right through its composition, all while things stay fresh and modern.
This summer is shaping up to be a big one for Ooberfuse with support slots for DJ Judge Jules at Wollaton Hall and Symphonic Ibiza at Tatton Park. They’ll also be sharing a stage with Pixie Lott, The Wanted and Sophie Ellis-Bextor as part of the Foodies Festival line-up curated by Musicians Against Homelessness.
Zeeba Da Boo is out now and you can give it a listen below.
