On a wet stormy November night, four Japanese warriors, silhouetted by the lights of the Crescent, took to the stage for a grand double-bill, treating their fans to a sell-out return to York.

They were last here in February 2023 at the Fulford Arms, reviewed by our very own Graeme Smith.
Three of the musicians play, or have played, in bigger bands. Kai, lead singer, guitarist and producer, plays guitar with The Sisters of Mercy, Takeshi, bassist, was part of MergingMoon, and Vincent Velazco, drums, has been in Ghost and Pendragon.
There was some anticipation in the house, with long-time fans (but first time seeing them live) in the front row. They were rewarded with a double bill that brought the combined experience of the band, mixed with the connection you form in a small venue like the Cresent. Their front-row position was rewarded as Kai reached into the crowd, with his hand bent into a half-heart, with the fans reaching out to complete the jigsaw.
In the first half they teased a big announcement before launching into Oceans Call. We had some emotion with Kai announcing “sometimes I cry when I sing this song; it’s about someone who is close but far away and no longer here,” before revealing that Stardust is about the bassist’s late cat.
It was during the second half that Kai broke down in tears as he broke the news. It was an exclusive. Their new album Aeons has hit the number 1 spot in the official Rock and Metal album chart. It’s a first for them, and we were first to know!
It’s always a treat seeing experienced musicians in a small venue. It’s that blend of the music, a great performance, and an emotional connection. There was plenty of that tonight during this gig. So, it seems right that it was in support of the Music Venue Trust.
Esprit D’Air played at The Crescent, York on Friday 14 November 2025.
