Building on the success of last year’s ‘behind the scenes’ autumnal events, The Grand Opera House York has announced an exciting new series of events designed to bring the local community together. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill, explore the theatre’s fascinating history, or simply enjoy spending time in a unique setting, there’s something for everyone.
From creative workshops and guided historical experiences to family-friendly activities, the programme offers visitors the chance to step beyond the stage and discover the magic that happens behind the scenes. These events also form part of the countdown to the 125th anniversary, which takes place in 2027.
Grand Opera House Theatre Director Allie Long said: “As we look ahead to celebrating 125 years of the Grand Opera House York in 2027, we want to invite our community to experience the theatre like never before. We are incredibly proud to welcome people through our doors, not just to enjoy world-class performances, but to discover the history and creativity that make this building so special.
“These events are about bringing people together and making our theatre an even more welcoming place for everyone. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’ve been coming for years, we hope you’ll find something to inspire and connect you with this remarkable venue.”
The Grand Opera House has been at the heart of York’s cultural life for more than a century, welcoming millions of visitors through its doors and hosting everything from spectacular musicals and comedy to drama, dance and family entertainment.

When a shocking crime is committed, you’ll work alongside fellow detectives to uncover clues, question suspects, and solve the case before the final reveal. Explore exclusive behind-the-scenes areas of the theatre rarely open to the public, brought to life by a cast of live actors in a bespoke story inspired by the Grand Opera House’s history. Dress in your finest 1920s attire for the chance to win a Best Dressed prize and immerse yourself in an evening of mystery, scandal, and suspense. Will you identify the killer before the final curtain falls?

Step beyond the pages of a familiar fairy tale and into a world where imagination leads the way.
In this writing workshop, young storytellers aged 9 +will explore the magic hidden within classic tales before creating stories of their own. Guided by the mysterious Thread Keeper and inspired by the world of Storywood, participants will discover that there is never just one version of a story—and that their own voice is the most important one of all.
Each workshop explores a different timeless tale, encouraging curiosity, creativity and confidence through imaginative discussion, creative writing, drawing and storytelling. Rather than retelling stories exactly as they’ve always been told, participants are invited to ask “What if…?”, explore different perspectives, create unforgettable characters and discover where their own ideas might lead.
Every storyteller receives a beautifully designed illustrated journal to take home, filled with activities, creative prompts and space to continue writing long after the workshop has ended.
Whether we wander through the woods with Little Red Riding Hood, lose a glass slipper with Cinderella or fly beyond the second star with Peter Pan, every adventure ends the same way: Follow the Thread. Find Your Story.

Are you a budding performer dreaming of the bright lights? Then come along to our Musical Makers session where you’ll learn a song and dance from a big West End musical and share it on our beautiful stage for your friends and family. From Hairspray and Legally Blonde, to Six, Wicked and Hamilton, we’re ready to take to the stage, we just need you.
Aimed at young performers aged 12-15, this session will be a fun and joyful event, no prior experience needed.
