EP Review: Josh Geffin – Hold On To The Light

Josh Geffin is an indie-folk singer-songwriter and musician based in London, who released a new EP titled Hold On To The Light back in July of this year. It’s very clearly a masterpiece of all proportions, so I urge you to check it out!

By Jane Howkins

Hold On To The Light starts with the haunting Will You Come Back From The War? It’s a beautiful song with an eerie edge to it, with military style percussion helping to build the track up, alongside the unique vocal delivery. The vocals are layered over each other, with pretty female vocals overlapping with Josh’s voice to create something that sounds almost like a choir at times. It’s a stunning opener and a shape of things to come.

Title track Hold On To The Light appears next, having a more positive vibe. It’s characterised by a flowing, fingerpicked acoustic guitar melody, sounding like several guitars being played at once. Light percussion performed on a bongo appears shortly after, as Josh’s vocals weave in and out of the music, as the backing vocals engage to create a gorgeous atmosphere.

Best We Could is a much more stripped down piece of music, consisting mostly of Josh’s vocals and a beautiful guitar melody. It’s a really sad sounding piece of music and is haunting throughout. The backing effects are slight but memorable, really helping to elevate the ambiance of the piece. This is a beautiful song and one of my favourites from the entire EP.

Dead Stars is a lovely closer, having more of a traditional folk sound. Josh’s lyrics are amazing here, sung in a clear vocal tone that really helps to characterise the song. Some percussion is added to the guitars later on, but it never sounds too much, as the track still sound rather folky. The guitar solos are achingly beautiful, leading into the next section perfectly.

Hold On To The Light is a wonderful EP and one that has stuck with me ever since I first heard it. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Josh Geffin’s music in the future!
