Underground Folk #2

I’m a big fan of folk music, so I’ve decided to revive my underground folk series and share some more fantastic artists from the genre with the world. All the artists here have elements of the folk genre within their music, although they’re all slightly different from one another.

The Baker’s Basement – Kings Hwy

First up are The Baker’s Basement, a folk group with more of an indie style to their music. Kings HWY opens with a slightly discordant guitar melody, before the percussion jumps in. The track utilises a set of dual vocals in a wonderful style, adding a harmonious vibe to the music. It’s a little different to the rest of the songs on this list, but it’s definitely worth your time, sounding unlike anything else I’ve ever heard before!

Dom Malin – South America

Regular readers of this blog should be aware of Dom Malin’s work now, as we’ve featured him a couple of times in recent months. South America is a little different to most folk music as it features an electric guitar as its main instrumentation, but the clean guitar sound works really well, particularly with the stripped-down vibes of the music. Dom’s vocals are stunning as always, having a hidden beauty in their soft depths.

Moses Mikheyev – Black Sky, White Moon

Moses Mikheyev is a Russian-American musician and singer-songwriter who has crafted a thing of beauty in Black Sky, White Moon. It opens with a lovely acoustic arpeggio, which continues in different formations through the track, as atmospheric backing effects provide more layers. Moses’ vocals have a lot of emotion contained within them, especially when his vocals hit those higher notes. It really is a thing of beauty!

Paul Moody – Time Bomb

Time Bomb opens up with what sounds like several acoustic guitar melodies playing amongst each other, adding a lovely textural quality to the music. It shows just how skilled Paul Moody is, crafting his music perfectly in alignment. His vocals have a soft sound, gliding through the most in a gorgeous way, especially on the chorus, which is hauntingly beautiful. The accordion is a lovely touch, adding an extra layer of gorgeousness to this stunning piece of music.

San Reetam – Under A Moon

San Reetam are a UK based music collective, made up of several different musicians working together to make a fantastic range of songs. The first thing that struck me about Under A Moon was the amazing chord sequence used, which has a certain beauty about it. It’s also quite different from the other songs on here, also having elements of pop and jazz, with a fantastic saxophone melody running through the song at times, alongside the heartfelt vocal lines.

Molly Baker – Must Be Nice

Molly Baker is another artist that we’ve featured before, with Must Be Nice being another fantastic slice of heaven. This track has more in common with the indie folk genre, starting with a fast acoustic note sequence that draws you in straight away. Molly’s soft vocals are backed by a selection of gorgeous backing vocals, with the synthlines that branch off from the main melody adding more layers to the piece. The chorus is also incredibly catchy, changing the rhythm up slightly.
