Established in 2014, Say Owt are York’s loveable gang of performance poets. They host high-energy nights of words and verse.
In a poetry slam, each poet gets a maximum of 3 minutes to wow randomly selected judges with their poetry. The audience can applaud and whoop to try and sway the judges to cheer on their favourite spoken word artist!
Say Owt Slams are full of humour, passion and warmth as poets share their unique stories in verse. It’s about bringing people together to celebrate words.
This event celebrates Say Owt’s 8th birthday. Artistic Director and host Henry Raby says: “It started as a one-off gig! I can’t believe we’re still slamming eight years later. Whether you’re a veteran or looking for something new, everyone is welcome at a Say Owt Slam.”
Say Owt Slam is hosted by the loveable crew of Stu Freestone, Henry Raby, Hannah Davies and David Jarman making you feel welcome, cheer on performance poetry, and have a few drinks along the way.
The gig will take place at the very special Crescent Community Venue. It feels like doing a gig in a big living room.
Featuring guest poet: Malaika Kegode, writer, performer and producer based in Bristol. Malaika has performed for the BBC at the Edinburgh Festival and worked with the Roundhouse, Historic England and Elstree Studios and supported Saul Williams. In 2018 she was included in the BME Power List, celebrating Bristol’s 100 most influential black & minority ethnic people. Malaika’s work tells of how we can find beauty and hope through the darkness. Her overall themes of family, mental health, addiction and love always have an undercurrent of optimism and strength. Her performance style has been described as “filmic” and “musical”.
Say Owt are only running two slams a year, so this will be the last Slam until deep into 2023!
