Interview: Alex Kate

Norwich-based musician and singer-songwriter Alex Kate has recently released a couple of amazing tunes, titled Lost In You & Rebel For Love. I’ve enjoyed everything she’s put out so far, so I’m hoping this interview will allow our readers to connect with her music a little more!

You recently released a track titled Lost In You, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?

Well, this song came about in an extraordinary way. I never know when I am going to write a song, it’s almost as though static electricity floats over my head and I have to catch it in time. I had just been watching the show Vera with my parents and suddenly felt the electricity. So I ran upstairs to my laptop and built a quick track and sang into my microphone nearly everything you hear melodically and lyrically. It then took many producers to make it sound the way it is. I even got it re produced 3 weeks before its release! The video was shot in Cape Town in December 2021. I was there for my brother’s wedding- so I tagged on lots of video and photoshoots – I felt very lucky to have been there!

You also released a track titled Rebel For Love. What can you tell us about that song?

Rebel For Love is a song about struggle and overcoming. The phrase was in my head before my writing session with Joshua Taylor and I had the movie of Robin Hood in my head too. We talked about the struggle that women have gone through through the ages and thought about what would happen if the song was from Maid Marions’ perspective. Joshua had the idea to put the line “shoot me down, we just won’t drown” as a nod to the times where women were drowned for being witches. In fact, they were just women who had opinions and didn’t fall in line. Recently with what has been going on in Iran, I wanted to dedicate the song to them.

How has the reception been for Rebel For Love been and where can it be purchased?

It’s been great, thank you, I was saying on my TikTok live that as an artist you can feel like you’re bashing your head against a brick wall, but when people genuinely connect with your music and say so, it is an incredible feeling.

Are there any plans to release an EP or album?

The EP Rebel For Love is out this Friday.

Do you have any other releases planned?

I have some singles ready to go in the new year, which I performed at my EP launch in Notting Hill. It was fun to see the crowd react to them.

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

I only started as an artist in October 2020, so I actually benefitted from the time to develop as an artist with little distractions.

Your music mixes together pop, rock and indie. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I’m influenced by Kate Bush, Haim, Florence and The Machine. I have been recently devouring the 1975’s new album, I would love to create an album as incredible as that.

Where are you based? What is the local music scene like?

I am based in Norwich, I have a headline show coming up there in February. Otherwise there seems to be a good buzzing scene here with some great people.

Do you have any UK tour dates lined up?

I have a tour in the works for February/March next year – dates to be announced soon.

Any last words for the fans?

I am so grateful for all the wonderful people supporting this lil’ English girl with a big dream.
