EP Review: Alex Kate – High Club

British singer songwriter Alex Kate has featured a couple of times before on these pages. In 2022 she was included in Jane’s Here Come The Brits round up, and Jane followed that up with an interview.

Fast forward eighteen months and it’s my turn to share some of her music. Her new EP High Club is all about the dizzying joy and crashing breakdowns of relationships, told with frank honesty based on her own experience. Across five tracks we are imparted with tales of romance, heartbreak, and release.

The emotional journey starts with the soulful pop of Not A Clue. Alex’s vocals are instantly arresting during the stripped-back groove of the first verse while things build nicely to a rich, dramatic electronic chorus. A climactic finish brings a sense of catharsis and it’s clear by then we’re in for something special with this EP.

Sober follows with a moody moment full of pleading vocals and relatable lyrics. Romance swirls with doubt during a dizzying story that is beautifully backed by a brooding yet funky instrumental.

But For Now slows things down with a introspective ballad before Cold Fire introduces some simmering, searching dance and R&B. Title track High Club closes the EP with a punchy pop number that feels like a rush of endorphins. It’s the perfect memorable finish to a short and sweet collection.

It’s the authenticity that really makes High Club. Alex brings so much of herself to it, and her engaging lyrics are superbly backed by an infectious electronic pop. She’s really locked into a timeless sound, all while bringing something new to the genre. Her new EP is the perfect showcase of her music for those discovering it for the first time.

If you happen to be in London on 2 May, Alex will be performing a headline show in Notting Hill that evening.
