We’ve featured Oklahoma indie rockers Blueprint Tokyo a couple of times recently, so it’s great to finally hear a longer body of work from the band. Cinema Sounds is their latest EP, released at the tail end of last month, so it’s still very fresh to us! If you’re a fan of their previous work, or have just stumbled upon this page by accident, make sure you check it out!
By Jane Howkins
The EP opens up with Say Anything, an electronic indie song that we’ve actually reviewed before. It still sounds just as good as it originally did, seeing Blueprint Tokyo bringing their own distinctive form of indie pop back to the genre to revitalise it. The vocals are really emotive, going through several different pitches as the song progresses – the high notes sound particularly heartfelt. Little guitar motifs and synths bubble away underneath the surface, as the rhythm section exudes energy.
LaRusso is next up – it’s a little slower than the previous song, but it’s no less impressive. The track has quite a nostalgic feel that fits the lyrics well (it’s hard to describe but you’ll know what I mean when you listen to it), as the breathy vocals add a more textural quality. The song breaks down occasionally to allow the synths to shine through, standing out on their own two feet. There’s so much going on here that you’ll need to listen to it through a few times over, showing just how outstanding the songwriting is!
Sailor Girl changes things up even further by adding a saxophone, bringing an 80s vibe to proceedings. The saxophone makes the music really stand out, mixing surprisingly well with the electronic-indie sound of the music. The vocals are just as emotive here, shouting out the refrain ‘We need a miracle!” over and over again on the chorus, making you really feel it. The little guitar and piano lines in the background only serve to make it sound even more beautiful.
Blueprint Tokyo are an indie band doing something very different from the norm, which should be applauded. Their music should appeal to most, whether you’re into 80s rock, 90s alt rock, indie or modern rock – ensure you listen to the stream of Cinema Sounds below!
