Interview: MINA

I recently completed a round-up review based on jazz music, with MINA’s track The One That Got Away being one of the stand outs on the list. She’s got a great singing voice and the music is also sublime, so you really ought to check the track out if you missed it!

How was your 2022?

It was a very transformative time for me. The pandemic was hard for everyone, and I feel we only just got back to feeling normal again last year. I would say I had the best summer ever, going out with friends and living life to the fullest. I travelled a lot, and my goal was to try as many new things as possible. Whether it was food, music or other experiences, I learned a lot about myself during that last summer.

You recently released a track called The One That Got Away, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song?

Yes, it is my second single to be released. I wrote it about my first breakup and the idea of having lost ‘the one’. It is my second collaboration with London composer and pianist Nathan Britton.

It’s a deeply personal song about a very universal topic. A breakup can feel like the end of the world and one can feel stuck in the dark. I want to give hope to those who lost a loved on or broke up and feel that way. The main message is that no matter how much pain we are in, the world keeps turning and every wound will heal eventually. Hopefully we can take it as a lesson and never give up on love.

How has the reception been for The One That Got Away, and where can it be purchased?

So far it’s been going well thank you. It was added to a few radio playlists and Spotify playlists and has been reviewed by great blogs! As a DIY artist, every bit counts and is appreciated! I am grateful to everyone who listens to the track – I love reading feedback from people who feel a connection by listening to the song. It means everything to me.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

Yes absolutely. I am planning to release more singles throughout the year, so keep an ear out and follow me on Spotify to be the first to hear my new music.

Are there any plans to release an EP or album?

I would love to. But for now, it’s just singles. In the future though, I would love to complete a concept album that takes the listener on a journey.

Your music has contemporary jazz sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I grew up listening to a varied selection of artists. I went through all the phases there can be including Motown, 80s pop, soul, etc. I love so many artists and when I love an album, I will listen to it over and over again… in terms of influences I count Sting as one of my biggest musical heroes. He is a good example of an artist who knows no boundaries in terms of genres and songwriting. It might not be obvious when listening to my music that is out right now, but just generally as an inspiration, he is part of my top 5. The others are Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Adele and Sade.

As I mentioned, I am very genre-fluid. Currently I am obsessed with The 1975, the new Little Simz album and Rosalía who I saw live on her most recent tour. All very different and incredible artists!

What do you think is the biggest challenge in the music industry at the moment?

The industry is ever changing, and I feel there is a desperation in the air about how to keep making money. Being an artist has never been a way of making a lot of money for most musicians. It is not why we choose this path. But it’s certainly not getting any easier in my opinion. Additionally, I feel there are less opportunities for new artists and the development of new talent, which is a real shame when I hear what outstanding talent is out there.

Where are you based? What is the music scene like where you are?

I am based between London and Switzerland. Both locations have amazing music scene yet are completely different. London is the birth place of so many legendary bands and genres and it still is a place where the best musicians come from. It has an amazing live scene and I always loved performing around London, the audiences are so supportive and loyal. Switzerland has come a long way and especially the support for women in music has been growing a lot. Switzerland has especially great festivals that are known around the world such as the Montreux Jazz Festival and Frauenfeld Openair.

Do you have any UK tour dates lined up?

Not yet, but hopefully soon. Since the pandemic I haven’t performed much and I’ve focused more on writing and recording. I am keen to get back on stage though 😊 You can sign up for my newsletter on minamusic.co.uk and follow me on social media and be the first to know when it’s happening. Instagram: @iamminaofficial

Any last words for the fans?

I am so grateful for each and everyone of you! My main goal has always been to connect with my audience and make them feel seen and heard through my music. If I can accomplish that for one person who listens, then I’ve already won. Thank you so much for listening! It means everything to me.
