Interview: Beaugé Soleil

I recently completed a round-up review based on music from Canadian artists. One such group was Beaugé Soleil and their song Eagleaire, from their EP The Watchtower. The track has a really fresh sound and sees the band mixing together a lot of different influences. You can find out more about them below.

By Jane Howkins

You released a single titled Eagleaire. What can you tell us about the track?

It was the last record we recorded for our EP The Watchtower, as we originally planned a 4 track project. However, it ended up being the lead single for our roll out. The record touches on our ancestry (Soleil is Métis, Beaugé is Haitian) and the challenges we experience generationally. It also displays our natural vibe and chemistry as we trade verses and compliment each other.

How has the reception to Eagleaire been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

The reception and support has been great, Eagleaire debuted on Big City Small World on national radio in Canada (our home). It’s also been supported by The Block and other radio platforms here. It’s been surreal, as we were included in some of the most popular Canadian music critics best new song list, Exclaim magazines’ Eh List and multiple Spotify official playlists. The song is available for streaming and purchase on all major platforms.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

We just released D’jazzman which is doing very well and is on New Music Friday, Northern Bars, New Music Now and Hip Hop daily Spotify playlists.

Do you plan to release a full-length album anytime soon?

Eagleaire & D’jazzman are singles off our EP The Watchtower, which we’ll be releasing this spring. We’re also starting the recording process for our follow up which will be a full length album.

Your music has an electronic r&b sound. What/who influences you most as artists? What have you been listening to recently?’

Eagelaire definitely has an electronic r&b sound, however it’s a standout in terms of sound – it’s the only record on our EP with this soundscape. Our influences vary from NX Worries, The Black Keys, Solange, Fela Kuti to Nas, Kendrick and Janis Joplin. We really just love great music and strive to make great music like the artists we love.

What do you think is the biggest challenge in the music business at the moment?

Definitely connecting the thread between, streaming, live shows, radio and getting our music to reach and connect with people with some level of synchronicity. As much as streaming gets ears to our music, there isn’t much opportunity to connect with those listeners. We definitely have to make a point to be accessible to the listeners in other ways.

Do you have anything else exciting planned for this year?

We’re performing a Sofar Sound show March 26th in Ottawa, ON with Zoo Legacy and Doressa. Soleil loves Ottawa so this is definitely a dream gig.

Where are you based? How is the local music scene faring at the moment?

We’re respectively based in Toronto, ON (Beaugé) & Hespeler, ON (Soleil). The Toronto music scene is rich with talent and curators looking to create opportunities. So it’s definitely a great place to be for emerging artists. There is so much love and support and a really strong community. Hespeler Village is a very small town but still has its own music festival and is tied to the neighboring Kitchener and Waterloo Music scenes. However, like a lot of small towns the arts scene has been impacted by Covid.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

We definitely plan to make it out to the UK and actually have friends in the music scene, like Storry who was recently featured on one of Stormzy’s latest singles. We’ll definitely be tapping into our network to get some shows lined up in the UK in the near future. Stay tuned.

Any last words for the fans?

Hi mom, hi dad! Thank you Fudgee!! (Fudgee is Soleil’s dog)
