EP Review: KABELLE – Restless Mind

I first discovered London-based synth pop trio KABELLE for this blog at the end of last year through their track Wonder. It’s the lead single from their newly released debut EP. A reflection on life as a musician during coronavirus lockdown, it’s called Restless Mind.

By Graeme Smith

For a band that’s just starting out, KABELLE already have quite an accomplished sound. That’s because even though the trio is new, the musicians that make it up are seasoned, featuring on releases by others and performing plenty of live shows. This debut EP is our first chance to see the range of KABELLE’s sound, and it does not disappoint.

The EP starts with A Million Pieces. A slow-building intro gives us electronica and rumbling bass before captivating vocals float in. We settle into an emotive groove, with textures aplenty before finally reaching a climactic chorus. It’s a strong start, that will get you right in the heart, and get you ready for what’s to come.

Wonder comes next, providing an early piece of catchy pop to keep us hooked. I’d forgotten what a bright track it is, bold in its arrangement and utterly absorbing. Its life-affirming lyrics will have you questioning everything in your life, in the very best way.

Title track Restless Mind slows things down. A slow-burning, minimal intro brings to mind groups like the XX and Chvrches but the percussive groove and lyrical message is unmistakably KABELLE. A song that takes its time and revels in its soundscape, it’s a definite highlight.

Ghost sits at the heart of the EP, providing an up-tempo, urgent piece of retro pop. Buried then gives us synth-laden maximalism. Fragile is a joyous M83-esque track that feels like the EP’s emotional climax. It’s another highlight. Feel Better then rounds off the EP with prominent bass and a positive message for the rest of our days.

If any further evidence was needed of what an exciting prospect KABELLE is, then this EP has provided it. They’re a band with a familiar yet fresh sound and the capability to take their music a long way. If this is the first you’re hearing of them, then you’re in for a treat.
