EP Review: Under Starlings – Portals

Under Starling are an Ireland-based alternative rock band who have just hit my radar thanks to their new EP Portals. The band draw influence from the likes of Biffy Clyro, The 1975 and U2 and are bringing something fresh and exciting to the rock genre.

By Graeme Smith

Though new to us, Under Starling are already building a devoted fanbase on the Irish rock scene. They’ve been picked up by the likes of BBC Radio Ulster among others and have been praised for their energetic live shows. They bring that energy to this record, starting right from the off with opening gambit Canopies. A slow, echoing, distorted guitar note lulls you into a false sense security before an emotive wave of vibrant pop rock hits you. Lyrically, it tugs at your heartstrings, as do the expressive vocals. It’s a strong start.

The main inspiration for the EP, and its name, was the landscape surrounding the portal tomb of the Burren. Each track is a sort of audible landscape of its own, not least Nazare which feels wonderfully expansive. A composition that slowly builds in complexity adds detail to the picture while we also get a wonderful sense of adventure from its lyrics. It’s a highlight.

Eros is a richly emotional track that draws on Greek mythology as well as modern pop rock love songs while EP closer Coraline is a delicate lullaby of a song. The use of vocoder brings to mind Bon Iver and shows a different side of the Under Starling sound.

Production and mixing for the EP comes from Christian Best, mastering by Tony Fitz, and it was recorded in the Monique Recording Studios in Cork. Portals is a wonderful introduction to Under Starling for this blog, and more evidence for the band’s backers that they are ones to watch. I have no doubt they will be playing a festival near you soon.

Portals by Under Starling will be released on 5 May 2023.
