Interview: Apricity

Pop-punk and emo have been having a revival of late, with many wonderful new bands and artists emerging in recent years. One such artist is Toronto-based musician Apricity, creating gorgeous new tunes like her latest release, Allison Wonderland. She clearly has a penchant for songwriting, so I implore you to check her music out – several streams can be found at the end of this interview if you’d like to find out more!

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a single titled Allison Wonderland. What can you tell us about the track?

Allison Wonderland tells the story of a girl who is trapped in the depressing reality of her failing relationship. To substitute this reality, she has created her own world (Wonderland), where everything is perfect and fantastical. We find out later, however, that the inevitable truth remains with her and that, even in this wonderland of her own creation, she can’t fully escape her depression.

How has the reception to Allison Wonderland been so far, and where can the song be purchased?

You can find the song on all platforms, including Deezer, Apple, YouTube and SoundCloud. The reaction has been very positive so far. It has been important for me to remain diversified across styles/genres in order to keep it interesting for the listeners, and to challenge myself as an artist and performer.

You worked with a wonderful team on this track, including Greg Critchley, Thomas McKay and Vic Florencia. How was the writing and recording process?

I feel blessed to have these talented professionals in my circle. I could not ask for a better team. Hard work and hours are all a part of the process, but with the talent behind putting these songs together – I can tell you it was a very smooth process due to the experience of these individuals.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

Absolutely. In fact, I am currently working in the studio!

Do you have an album or EP coming out soon?

Yes. I am hoping to have my EP finished soon. I am currently working on finishing it in studio.

Allison Wonderland has an emo/pop-punk sound. What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

I grew up listening to Kate Bush, Evanescence and Blondie, to name just a few. What I like about them is that they all have strong vocals and a strong stage presence in a ,storytelling manner, which to me is perfect as this is really what a song is about. Continuing to tell stories in songs is a representation of what has impacted my sound. I am also a fan of Alanis Morrisette and Avril Lavigne!

You’re from Toronto. What is the local music scene like at the moment?

I actually live on the outskirts of the Greater Toronto area. In terms of the Toronto scene, the music, artists and bands here are very diversified. I have met a lot of great musical talent and been able to play shows with a wide variety of people at this point.

Do you have anything else exciting coming up this year?

Yes, just as I had mentioned, I’m working on my EP, along with a few other music videos. I’m hoping to launch them this year.

Do you have any tour dates lined up for the UK?

This is in the works! I’m looking forward to playing back at home and having family and friends attend.

Any last words for the fans?
