The Grand Opera House is celebrating a year of opening the venue beyond shows to deliver educational and community-based activities. It has been a fantastic journey so far, welcoming those as young as 2 years for our monthly Storytimes to platforming emerging talent with our Scratch Nights or giving the public an insight into our history with a venue tour.
Kelly Culver, the theatre’s Creative Learning Producer says:
“To highlight some of the work we’ve done with young people we wanted to share our story and spotlight the amazing talent in the city. It’s a privilege to support the future generation of performers and theatre makers as they continue to engage with Creative Learning and show-based activity, including Shrek the Musical, The Woman in Black and our yearly pantomime by working with schools, York College, and York St John’s University. In August, we led our Summer Theatre Camp and funded places through HAF (Holiday Activity and Food programme) to support local students. Across two weeks the stage was taken over with under 16’s to learn about our technical operations through to drama, music, and dance workshops. We even had a special visit from our Dame, Berwick Kaler, on stage to talk about all things panto”.
As we approach this year’s pantomime, we reflect on our first year of activity, working with the local community at all ages to share the magic of theatre. We are committed to continue this important work with an exciting programme for 2024. We hope to see you at these events soon!
Visit our website atgtickets.com/york to see what’s to come – including Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates of the River Ouse which starts tomorrow -plus many future Creative Learning events including Storytime and theatre tours.
