EP Review: Resting B!tch Face – Sounds Gay, I’m in!

Resting B!tch Face are a Birmingham-based punk collective who hit our radar in 2022 thanks to their rebellious track BYOB. Now they’re back on these pages through the release of their debut EP. Released in celebration of queer culture and for International Women’s Day, it’s called Sounds Gay, I’m in!

By Graeme Smith

Despite the progress that has been made in terms of celebrating differences in society, there is still a lot of work to be done. That’s why days like International Women’s Day are important, and the existence of bands like Resting B!tch Face. Rightly or wrongly, the championing of different identities fall on the shoulders of the few, and this band are certainly among them.

Resting B!tch Face are Jasmin and Queen Yatisha on vocals, Jay Newton and Joe Duignan on guitars and vocals, Sar/Lou on bass and backing vocals, and Jackson on drums.

Their debut EP takes back the power, railing against the status quo and revelling in being queer, and size and race diverse. Resting B!tch Face are becoming known for their exuberant live performances, and that energy translates to the record too. If you’re looking to get fired up today, then Sounds Gay, I’m in! is just the tonic.

The EP consists of six breakneck tracks, opening with the irreverent Straight White Man. Jangly riffs open things up before quickfire vocals follow. Resting B!tch Face take no prisoners with their sardonic lyrics while the track’s soaring chorus will have you bopping along. It’s the perfect balance of style and substance, and a great start.

From there get four more anthems covering topics such as forgetting the judgement of others in the bass-heavy Cauterize the Critics and the affirming Par for the Course, female individualism in the defiant Good Girl, and rebuilding society in metal-infused anthem Revolution (Sounds Gay, I’m in!). Things are then rounded off by Resting B!tch Face’s joyful take on Doja Cat’s Boss Bitch.
