Discovery: Kyle & The 8-Minute Miles’ debut album is a raucous garage rock blunderbuss

Hailing from Orlando, USA, Kyle & The 8-Minute Miles are a garage rock band who are new to our blog through their self-titled, debut album.

By Graeme Smith

The album gets off to a raucous start with the quick-fire riffs of Despair. Emotional vocals contrast the hard edge of the instrumental with some softness while an anthemic chorus proves an early highlight as we prepare for a helter-skelter 30 minutes.

That’s My Story (And I’m Sticking To It) keeps things cantering while adding some darkness to the mix. Storytelling lyrics in the verse will have you gripped. Complicated slows things down for a cynical moment before Head On Straight provides some dreamy rock and roll. Drug Song! closes the album’s first half with a dishevelled one-minute chant.

***ANTI-WEED PSA*** is a quirky, stripped-back number while Trampoline bounces along brightly. In My Dreams brings some soulful alternative rock swagger. It’s another highlight. Nobody Hates Me (Like I Do) gives us some late album punchiness before The Times closes the collection in smouldering, bittersweet style.

There’s a feeling of shooting from the hip across the album’s ten tracks, but doing so with a blunderbuss. It’s edgy, emotional rock at its best, not taking itself too seriously while delivering some killer blows.
