The Art of Burning Bridges is the debut album from The Sunmills, exploring failed relationships, ghosted girlfriends and self-sabotage.

The album is a varied yet cohesive collection which beautifully introduces The Sunmills catchy sound. Early on, the funky bass, uplifting lyrics and dream pop of Not Going Home is nicely contrasted by the raucous classic rock of Rock and Roll.

As the album progresses it is at times quirky and self-effacing as in Burning Bridges, and the swinging and soulful Sucks To Be You. At the close of the album, we get the folksy psychedelic odyssey of Jonny Appleseed, a highlight.

Throughout we get an abundance of emotional messiness, sarcasm and lyrical causes for concern. The Sunmills really don’t mind putting it all out there, and it makes their debut album a compelling listen.

The Highland, Utah, USA-based Sunmills describe themselves as a mix between the riffs of Jimi Hendrix and the grooves of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and fans of those acts will find a lot to love about what they’re doing. If you like ’90s alternative rock, then their debut is the album for you.
