Named for the address at which he lived and became an artist in Mexico City, Prosperidad #37 is the debut album from Enrique De La Rosa.
By Graeme Smith
The album has a moody opening thanks to the wandering bass and bright keys of Moon Dust. The track plods along, finding an easy groove while subtle textures add variety and narrative. La Condesa follows in bombastic style, pairing heavy percussion with playful synths. It’s a track that’ll get you moving. Just as you get the measure of it, sci-fi overtones transport you.
The album progresses with atmospheric instrumental after atmospheric instrumental, bringing together lo-fi, hip-hop, and electronica.
Sorry, i don’t have the energy is a textured highlight and sees De La Rosa team up with Loop City and Zerujio. Metrobus, too, captivates with its dynamism and sense of movement. It’s all about you adds a vocal element during a dreamy number. A team up with Yirman Jimenez and Yamil Soleibe delivers a gritty, brassy Spanish language highlight called The Yirman Song – 48 Horas.
De La Rosa sees the album as the “closing of an emotional cycle” and is now ready to embark on the next adventure of his life. Based on the quality of his debut, it’s likely to be an exciting one for us as listeners. If you’re a fan of lo-fi hip-hop then Prosperidad #37 is a must listen. It’s out now and you can stream it below.
