EP Review: JustFresh – What’s It Worth?

What’s It Worth? is the third release this year from New York-born, Atlanta, USA-based rapper, lyricist, music producer, and audio engineer, JustFresh. Instead of a beats-only collection, this one combines instrumental tracks and tracks with self-penned lyrics on top of original beats. It’s an introduction to his music for us and his official reintroduction as a self-produced rapper, given that he’d spent some time away from recording to go back to school and improve his audio engineering.

The EP includes seven old-school hip hop and disco tracks infused with Latin, classical, lo-fi, and EDM elements. It opens with Lemme Paint A Picture, a brooding tour de force with gentle instrumentals paired with hard-hitting lyrics. JustFresh’s delivery and flow were so pleasing, leaving me wanting more.

Suspended in Air takes things in a nicely lo-fi direction with warmth in the track and brightness in its lyrics. This That One gives us a surprise acoustic guitar lick mixed expertly with electronic flourishes. Hustle Til The 1st sits at the heart of the EP, ruminating on the grind that comes with pursuing success. The textures of the track are nothing short of stunning, while its lyrics are infinitely relatable. It’s a highlight.

Stars At Night is suitably cosmic, with a tremendous sense of atmosphere and a chilled groove. Deep In Space has a similar vibe but introduces lively percussion and quick-fire verses. Shadows In a Fog closes the EP with a slow-burning lo-fi instrumental. Its genre-pushing style makes it another highlight.

I have to admit, I sometimes struggle to get into hip hop, but when an artist as earnest and honest as JustFresh comes along, I sit up and listen. The fact he combines the genre with the very on-trend lo-fi sounds makes this EP irresistible.
