York’s Miles and the Chain Gang get romantic for acoustic single

Regularly featured on our blog through their originals and unexpected covers, Miles and the Chain Gang have been dipping into their archives of late.

By Graeme Smith

Love Like A Freight Train was originally recorded in June 2010, and band leader Miles Salter decided to dust it off.

“I found it on my computer a while ago and thought it was all right,” he says “I’m pretty choosy about what gets released, but it was fun and short and it’s nice to have variety in what goes out into the world. I’m not interested in doing the same thing over and over.”

While the track does certainly show us some variety thanks to its stripped-back acoustic style and pop-infused brightness, we do still get to the image-laden lyrics we’ve come to expect from Salter. They’re romantic with a bit of weariness.

“I always liked that idea of the lonesome troubadour,’ Salter says. “The romantic vision of the guy who sleeps in train compartments and goes from place to place, guitar in hand. The reality would be less dreamy, of course, but it’s a nice idea, stretching out to see the world, brewing coffee in Oklahoma as dawn breaks, making friends in wild places.”

Their third release of 2025, Miles and the Chain Gang are showing no signs of slowing down.

“I need to write more songs,” confesses Salter. “I’ll be recording some covers, fantastic gems by other writers, but not well known. I’m on the lookout for songs that will reach and move people. It’s better, really, if they are not widely recognised.”

We eagerly anticipate what’s to come next. In the meantime, Love Like A Freight Train is out now, and you can listen to it below.
