York Theatre Royal is hosting The Mischief Before Christmas, A magical, mischievous adventure for 3- to 7-year-olds and their grown-ups.
By Laura Toomer
Once upon a time there were two rather mischievous Christmas spirits. They would travel the land with a twinkle in their eye, looking for a place to tell their stories – the perfect place, just right for a little mischief, a sprinkling of Christmas magic and a huge dollop of fun. Performed by State of Play Theatre (who have previously produced performances such as Cinderella and Puss in boots at the De Grey rooms), this year’s performance was their best yet.
The Mischief before Christmas was a fun and exciting journey around the Theatre Royal and is great for both adults and children, being an interactive show where the adventurers take a walk around the beautifully revamped foyer of the theatre and then up the stairs into a specially made den.
Twinkle and Jingle were our leaders for the journey and were full of energy, wonder and excitement, the perfect mirror of every child that was accompanying them. Wide eyed and full of festive spirit both actors were truly wonderful storytellers, filling the space with Christmas cheer.
The story led us on a magical mission to save Christmas after the mischievous elf Frank played a prank that went wrong. Later we witnessed an elf cart crash in the foyer, sang Jingle Bells while climbing the stairs and played with giant bouncing baubles. The beautifully whimsical puppets that State of Play Theatre are known for made a striking appearance in the story of Sophie, as well as when performing with the star of the show Frank. The simple but lifelike way the puppets were brought to life certainly captured out attention and left us wanting for more, before a trip to see Santa.
We have seen the show State of Play have put on each year over the festive season and they are definitely a magical Christmas must have tradition for all families to take part in. This is a show not to be missed and it will leave you full to the brim of Christmas cheer ready for the rest of the season!
