Pop-punk trio from Italy The Marvels have released their latest album Next Level.
By Laura Southren-Dale
The Marvels released album The Next Level earlier this year, and it is a true homage to the pop-punk genre. It contains many of the ideas and lyrical tropes that the genre holds dear, including loyalty, love, tenacity and bravery.
The Italian trio consists of Mario Meli on lead vocals and guitars, Ferdinando Cipullo on vocals and bass, and Gisueppe Grillo on the Drums. The album consists of witty song lyrics and is scattered with guitar riffs (which one could perhaps be forgiven for thinking there are a few too many of), fused together with occasional moments of electronic music, and it makes for great listening. The songs are akinto those by similar artists within the genre like Blink 182, Sum 41, and Jimmy Eat World, but are also unique with their own brilliant sense of humour that shows through in the lyrics – especially in the case of Poop Rock and The Legend of The Superhero.
The song that particularly stands out is Hold on, a song very similar in some ways to The Middle by Jimmy Eat World, dealing with the topics of loyalty and pure strength of will. If you only get chance to listen to one song off the album, then make it that song; the lyrics are fantastic, and the music is well balanced with both electronic elements and guitar riffage showing through. The trio are stepping out from Italy after promoting their music there, and are now aiming to bring their music to the U.K. and the rest of Europe. The Marvels are definitely a band to check out if you are a fan of Blink 182, Simple Plan, Jimmy eat world or the pop punk genre in general.
Although saying that, you might just want to check this album out anyway – we think it will be worth it as it’s very good.
