American rock band Patent Pending have released a new cover album.
By Jane Howkins.
The latest Patent Pending album is a little different to recent efforts. Instead of releasing an album full of new tracks, they’ve instead decided to cover some pop songs – an action not uncommon within the pop-punk genre. It’s a fun album, but fans wanting new material may find themselves slightly disappointed, given that the originals of these songs are somewhat alternative to the usual.
The tunes on Other People’s Greatest Hits are quite varied, but they are all songs that the majority of people listening will know and love. The band have put their own unique spin on things, but at the same time, they haven’t changed the fundamentals of the songs too much, which may be a good or bad thing, depending on the listeners opinion of each tune.
There are a good range of songs present on the record, and they’re mostly all typical party songs, with highlights including a cover of The Spice Girls’ Spice Up Your Life (complete with gang vocals) and Ricky Martin’s Livin La Vida Loca. They’ve even managed to make Mr Brightside (originally by The Killers) sound cheery, which in itself is a worthy feat. Our only real issue is that the production sounds a little too clean at times, but that doesn’t detract much from the fun.
We fully recommend that you give the new offering a chance, especially if you’re a Patent Pending fan. Other People’s Greatest Hits is a fun party album, and whilst it is more of a pit stop for the band as they ramp up creativity for their own unique pursuits, it’s still worth checking out if any of the above appeals to you.
