Performance is the new album from White Denim, with the result being an upbeat rock and roll album in the vein of the band’s usual style. Whilst it isn’t too different from their previous work it’s still a fairly good album, and is one that current fans of the band should enjoy.

However, whilst Performance may not be the reinvention of the wheel, White Denim do sound somewhat refreshed this time around, with a slew of high impact riffs mixing together well with a healthy rock and roll swagger to make a record that is the definition of cool. There’s something very retro about a lot of the riffs and the songwriting structure on offer, but the band manage to mix that up by introducing in different elements, with hints of funk, soul, and psychedelic rock also making their way into the album. You never know what you’re going to get on the next track, and whilst it doesn’t always sound cohesive, it certainly stops Performance from getting mundane.
The band have had a few big changes over the last couple of years. Firstly, they had a major line-up shake up back in 2015, and secondly, they decided to build their own studio to record Performance in.Whilst these things could have gone very badly for them, everything appears to have gone swimmingly, and you can really hear that the band sound a lot more rejuvenated than they did beforehand. There’s nothing too deep here, and those looking for something to ponder on may be disappointed, but if you like big rock riffs and swagger then you will find something to like here, especially if you have an open mind and are happy to check out other genres along the way.
Their music might have a slightly dated feel to it, but we certainly don’t think that’s a bad thing, especially in a world where it sometimes seems as though the music industry is moving forwards too fast. White Denim are still performing a style of music relatively similar to their older work, however they have added a number of different elements into the mix which has improved their appeal greatly – let’s hope they can keep it up!
