Friday night went off with a bang when Dutch DJ and producer Young Marco played to a packed Fibbers dancefloor. Young Marco, signed to the Dekmantel label, ignited Fibbers with an eccentric blend of techno and house with elements of afrobeats and world music. Nicely warmed up by his supporting DJs, Grice & Harrison and Fred Salt, the crowd was ready to see the Dutchman play. The night was closed off by Harvington who brought the dizzy night to a satisfying close. The event itself was organised by popular student events company, Blackbox.

This night was bound to be exiting from the start, Fibbers was excellently prepared with netting, house plants and tropical vines from the stage to the floor, setting a relaxed and friendly yet exciting atmosphere. Throughout the night it was very much a case of ‘blinded by the lights’ as impressive light shows danced up and down the crowd taking them through every peak and trough of the musical experience. The crowd itself was also fantastic, filled with young people all enjoying themselves to the fullest; this truly was Fibbers at its dizzying best.
The supporting cast of exciting young house and techno selectors who opened and closed for Young Marco would have been worth seeing in their own right as they whipped the crowd up with infectious dancefloor beats ready for the main event. It seemed that everyone had a smile on their face long before Young Marco himself played, which speaks volumes about the energy and talent of the supporters.
When it came time for Young Marco’s impressive two-hour long set, the Dutch DJ presented a carousel of eclectic techno delights with influences spanning from afrobeats, world music and house. Donned in his signature bandana, Young Marco effortlessly worked the decks and the crowd, showing of his experience and natural talent in equal measure. It was also exciting to see a foreign act playing at Fibbers, showing York’s growing and in my view underrated place in the underground and electronic music scene. Young Marco’s blending of track after track gave a feeling that the night would never end as the crowd was seamlessly guided through one beat after another.
It is impossible to sum up this night while at the same time doing it justice, but I would strongly suggest that any readers who are fans of EDM keep an eye out for any more bookings at Fibbers, and the next time Young Marco plays around York or the North. Either of these two options is guaranteed to be a dizzying and electrifying night.
