Interview – Caroline Gustavsson

I recently included Swedish musician and singer-songwriter Caroline Gustavsson’s holiday song Christmas Lights in a playlist and round-up review I completed about holiday songs. I loved her form of Christmas song and we don’t hear much music from Sweden, so decided to find out a little bit more about her and her music!

You recently released a new track titled Christmas Lights. What can you tell us about the track and where can it be purchased?

Christmas Lights is a feel good song about finding love and the joy of spending the holiday with the one you love!

Originally this song was released in the movie A Christmas Exchange which premiered in 2020. The response was so positive that I decided to release it myself and after a year of waiting, it’s finally here!

You can stream it on any platform and also buy it on iTunes.

Would you ever consider doing more Christmas/holiday songs in the future? How do you celebrate the holidays?

Definitely, I love writing Christmas songs, even though this is the first one I release myself.
Christmas to me is a holiday spent with family and loved ones, this year I’m going to visit my parents who live in the southern parts of Sweden.

I’m really looking forward to decorating the tree since I didn’t get a tree for myself.

Have you got any plans to release a full length album or an EP anytime soon?

I’m planning on releasing an album with acoustic versions of my songs and adding in a couple new ones as well. No date is set, but I’m aiming for sometime in the first half of 2022.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

It varies a little bit and depends on if the aim is for another market/group/artist or not.
But when I write songs for myself, I usually start out with a theme what the song will be about and then I sit down with my guitar or piano and just improvise, sing whatever comes out.
Melodies usually come first, but I try to write the lyrics at the same time to make sure the melodies reflect what I wanna say.

Do you plan to release any singles at any point in the near future?

I have songs in the pipeline though they’re not recorded yet, but there will definitely be one coming up in the near future!

You’re originally from Sweden. What is the music scene like in your part of the world at the moment?

I think we follow the US trends a lot. The last couple years many of our Swedish artists started releasing more material in Swedish too, and I believe that trend has gotten bigger every year, which is really nice!

What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

Recently I’ve actually rediscovered some of my favorite bands and one of them is Goo Goo Dolls. I really love the rock/pop sound and that they also bring in the acoustic guitars in the mix. I like songs where melody and lyrics are the main focus. Goo Goo Dolls tend to have quite poetic lyrics as well that I really enjoy.

Other than that I’m a fan of catchy pop, anything with a Max Martin style to name something.

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

I haven’t been playing live at all, but writing songs has continued as usual, though there have been more online sessions than in house sessions.

Do you have any tour dates lined up? What can people expect from one of your shows and why should people come and see you perform live?

No tour dates at the moment I’m afraid, but I hope things will ease up on that end as well soon. My shows tend to have a more acoustic vibe and I think the audience will get another level of connection with me and my music if they come see me live.

Any last words for the fans?

Thank you for supporting me!
