Interview – James Morrison

Musician and singer James Morrison should need no introduction, having had a huge career over the past couple of decades. He is about to release a new album on Friday, so I jumped at the chance to be able to interview him. Find out more below!

You have a new greatest hits album coming out soon. What can you tell us about the record?

I’m really excited to see what people think of the refreshed versions. To me, it sounds old school – like 60s or 70s music, but with a fresh twist. All of my most popular songs on one album with two brand new songs .

Why did you decide to release a greatest hits album? When you first started out, did you ever think you would get to the point of releasing such an album later in your career?

It started as a way to have all my songs that people know in one place. I wanted to give the songs a refresh because some of those recordings are over 15 years old. I never thought I’d have a greatest hits album, so that is really exciting for me.

Do you have any plans to release any new music anytime soon?

Yes, I sure do plan to release new music. I have been writing a lot during the pandemic so I’m definitely looking forward to working more on new music.

You’ve recently released a new single titled Who’s Gonna Love Me Now? What can you tell us about the track?

I wanted to write a tune to dance to with a drop before the chorus. It felt like it came together pretty quickly. It’s a tune for a vocalist to get into.

You’ve also recorded a new version of your classic song, You Give Me Something. How did that come about, why did you decide to re-release the song?

I’ve recorded my most popular songs, with You Give Me Something being one of them. It’s a greatest hits album, so it made sense to put that song on there. I refreshed it because I had the chance to improve it a little, so I took it. It’s one of my favourite re-recordings . I tried to make it more soulful and breezy.

Is this something you would consider doing again in future? Are there any other songs you’d like to reissue/remake?

Only if I had loads more hits would I do another album like this again. I would always like the opportunity to refresh stuff , but it’s way more exiting writing new material.

Do you have any more singles planned for release soon?

Not just yet but who knows, I’ve got some good songs in the bag.

You have some tour dates coming up next year. Are you excited? Is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to playing?

I love playing the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Holland, Germany places where the sun shines. I love nature, so anywhere there is a good sunset. The Caribbean?

What can people expect from a James Morrison show and why do you think people should come and see you perform live?

If you like emotional songs with melody, a good vocal line and a great live band, and you want to go somewhere else for a bit, come along. You might laugh and cry!

Any last words for the fans?

I really hope you enjoy the album and new songs – I hope it brings back some nice memories listening to my music! I can’t wait to see you all out in the world at my gigs. Stay loose but focused. Stay fresh.
