Interview – Mock Deer

Mock Deer released a new track called Contempt For Others recently – I checked the song out and really enjoyed the haunting nature of it, so decided to find out more! Read our interview below for more info!

By Jane Howkins

You released a track last year called Contempt For Others, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the song and where can it be purchased? What does the title refer to?

Yes, the song is about the struggle/complexities of being human and the challenges of co-existing with other humans. You can get it here – https://mo…r-others-2

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

Yes, unfortunately it has. It kicked in just after the release of my debut album, so the release was kind of deflated and the planned tour was cancelled. I was also one of those folks who struggled to be creative throughout the lockdowns, I did a few bits and bobs but I just couldn’t get the head space for it. However, I’m well aware it was way worse for many others, so I still have gratitude for my own well being and for that of my loved ones.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

It’s definitely evolved over the years, but it seems to have now settled on something like this –

I make lyric notes and fiddle with the guitar throughout the year, whilst also rehearsing, planning tours/shows, playing live, recording, releasing music, until I know that I need/want to start writing some new stuff. I then develop my notes and guitar noodling gradually into something a bit more solid, make some demos and repeat!

Do you plan to release any singles in the near future?

Yes, I have another from the EP coming out on the 18th of Feb!

Are there any plans to release an EP or an album anytime soon?

Yes indeed, the EP Perceptions is released on the 4th of March 2022, you can pre-order it here – https://mo…erceptions

What/who influences you most as an artist? What have you been listening to recently?

Aw man, SO much. I really admire bands like Arcade Fire and Radiohead as well as a million other artists/bands. I’m currently really into Bill Fay and Devon Sproule!

But I’m also really inspired and influenced by many other lesser known artists, including the amazing band The Burning Hell, who were actually my backing band for this record!

Whereabouts are you based and what is the music scene like in your part of the world?

I’m based in London so not short of a gig or 10!

Do you have any tour dates lined up?

I don’t just yet. I’ve been really hesitant because of the covid situation, and now there is a backlog. I’ll definitely be booking some dates soon locally in the South of the country, but a tour is likely to be later in the year than I would have liked.

What can people expect from one of your shows and why should people come and see you perform live?

I think they can expect an honest, thoughtful and emotional performance. I’m always up for a drink and a chat afterwards. You can probably also rely on some random impromptu stage banter and potentially some visceral, nervous energy!

Any last words for the fans?

Thank you! Don’t be afraid to get in touch to say hi and I hope to see you at a show soon!
