Interview – Beautiful Animal

I recently reviewed the track Multicolourflower by Beautiful Animal – the band have a really catchy indie rock sound to their music, making for a great overall listening experience. If you haven’t checked them out yet (and why not?!), then make sure you check the track out at the end of this interview with guitarist Juhis.

By Jane Howkins

You recently released a song titled Multicolourflower, which we reviewed. What can you tell us about the track and where can it be purchased? What does the title refer to?

“As the drop of morning dew falls off the rhubarb leaf at your Mom’s garden, the usually plain marguerite daisies are for a flashing moment like eternity seen flickering at full spectrum”. The song is about maternal love which is the most amazing kind of love. As far as we know.

Has the pandemic hindered your work much?

Not that much. Some of the local restrictions forced us to work at an alternative rehearsal studio and of course, the absence of live shows had an effect. Anyway, we wanted to take this all as a chance, rather than an obstacle.

What is the writing and recording process like for you?

One or some of us comes up with an idea, or sometimes with an idea of an idea, but eventually we finish it off together. Of course, all this depends on the quality of the original idea, which may or may not be raw or nearly overdone. Anyway, once the tune is finished and the lyrics worked out, the aim is to rehearse and record as quickly as possible. For that, we have our special cave in the suburbs of Helsinki to create the genuine Beautiful Animal sound. The band is mainly DIY in all of its doings, sound wise.

Do you plan to release any more singles in the near future?

There exists a plan to release two more singles by the summer.

Do you have plans to release an EP or album anytime soon?

An album is indeed in the talks but there is still a lot of talking to do.

What/who influences you most as artists? What have you been listening to recently?

What influences us? Sex, drugs and rock & roll!
On a more serious tone, we dig artists who are not afraid of being true to themselves. Recently we have been listening to Nirvana, Beatles and Tears For Fears. Roxette and Phil Collins are always in our playlists.

Where are you based? What is the music scene like in your part of the world? Are you influenced by your surroundings?

We come from the land of ice and storm. From the midnight sun – that is Helsinki, Finland.

Do you have any tour dates lined up?

Not at the moment.

Any last words for the fans?

We deliver a nice gig with lots of great and original tunes. Our aim is to make people believe in happiness, joy and real live music. No backing tracks whatsoever. Everything is live and real.
