EP Review: VGref – Stressed Out

VGref is a 22 year old music producer specialising in the EDM and rap genres. His young age makes his music sound all the more impressive, having achieved much more than most of his peers. VGref’s work has culminated in the release of an EP, Stressed Out, seeing the young producer adapting to the music industry in perfect style.

There are just three songs on Stressed Out, making it sound short, yet sweet! You Are Amazing is the first track up, kicking in with hip-hop-esque percussion and eerie synth melodies that balance perfectly in the background. The verses are rapped, with a gorgeous female vocal melody appearing on the chorus, changing the tone of the piece nicely. It’s a bit of a slow burner, but it works well as an introduction to VGref’s music.

Next up is the title track, Stressed Out. This song has a more positive vibe, with some intriguing synth lines providing most of the instrumentation here. The track still has an eerie quality to it though, and whilst it sounds quite minimalist at first, there’s actually a lot more going on here than at first listen. The rapping is overlaid with autotune, but it works well with the style of music presented.

Last, but by no means least, is Slay, following on from the musical themes of the previous two tracks. The backing vocals are very interesting, sounding almost like a choir at times. Once again, VGref’s vocals sound unique when compared to the other songs on this EP, with a slightly different pronunciation style making them sound emotive throughout. I also really enjoyed the flute melody that appears about halfway through the song.

VGref is an artist approaching the rap genre with a different perspective on Stressed Out, with well thought out melodies and synth lines mixing well with the vocals he spits out. It’s more of a hip-hop/rap record than an EDM one, but the creative synths show that VGref is also a talented producer.
